It looks to me like the same dynamic as pairs ice skating. In ballet, the point historically used to be to present the prima ballerina in a way that appeals to her real boyfriend, the sugar daddy/patron. Similarly, in some cases with the primo as well. Hard to say in this case, but clearly they are performing perfectly without errors, as if it's really, really important. This is physically interesting too, like a prelude to what might be seen at the Olympic Games there. (It's a shame, but I'm refusing to watch any of that myself, my political objections are too strong.) Sort of extreme ballet crossed with gymnastics, with a bit of Peking Opera. It reminds me of the kind of Chinese acrobatic girls you see in Cirque Du Soleil shows. And standing on point on the bony point at the joint where his collarbone joins the shoulder , that's a new one on me. (Ouch...)
