Musings on Approaches to Dolls and Doll Ownership/Purchasing

I've been resisting an urge lately.

I've been thinking more and more about buying heads that I like, but have no particular attachment to or use for, and employing them as 'extras' in photoshoots. They would have no concrete identities, and would get plopped onto different bodies (and have their wigs/eyes/clothes switched out) in order to become peripheral characters as I need them.

Part of me is mildly horrified by this idea, because of how I interact with my dolls (damnit, I MISS my resin when they're gone), but another part of me is fine with it because they'll be non-characters (and I don't feel the same way about them because of that). I also recognize that (with the direction my photostories and methods have been heading) extras that I can kill off, or have my main crew interact with, are something that I'm probably going to end up needing.

Anyone have thoughts on this idea? Have I finally cracked and need to go have my head examined again? Is it pure genius and I should totally roll with it? Is it just an excuse to buy doll heads (well, okay, I know it's not that, because I don't need an excuse for that)?

Haha, I've never heard of that before! It's certainly interesting, and sounds like fun! I'd be worried of getting too attached to them and forming characters, but that varies from person to person, after all ^ ^

Yes, that's a distinct possibility. I suspect I'll end up naming them, but I think I'll be able to keep them from becoming 'concrete' in my mind. I think it will help that they'll probably be spending most of their time in a padded drawer, except for when they're borrowing someone else' body and appearing in a shoot.

Hmmmm well you have a number of heads already right? XD Personally it's not something I would do. But then I'm horrible when it comes to photostories and all. Also I got bodies to get. Maybe once you've got the planned crew home well then yeah why not go for it hehe. You've got a few needing to come still right? *cough* Hideo *cough* XD. But it's an interesting idea for sure. Like maybe nab a less expensive body or two and the heads can just share it for whenevers needed. If you can tolerate heads just sitting around or not having no real character....... why not. Just gotta make sure they still have their uses to justify buying them and such. Also depending on how many heads you would be planning to buy might determine if it's just an excuse to buy doll heads or not lol. Are any of the heads you currently own useable for this idea too?

That's my two cents anyway on the subject.....no idea how smart or good it is but meh. I tried XD

I do have quite a few heads, but none are currently for this purpose - they all have identities, and I just haven't been able to get bodies for them yet. The only possible exception is Madgalena, and she's...a complicated project at the moment.

Hideo and I have been discussing Hideo's future. Hideo is lobbying for a 60cm incarnation rather than a 45cm one. We'll see.

Hmm...

You might try getting one or two rather cheap ones (say Obitsus or Garden of Dolls). Seeing how they work out as extras! You may come to love them in their own way- for the valuble being extras service they provide.

I do have an Obitsu Gretel head, and I love her. I actually have a plan for her that involves a SoulDoll Girl Double body.... **sweatdrop**

If it were me, the extras would end up evolving into characters with elaborate back stories... 8-P

But maybe you could specifically hire heads, you know? Actor-heads. Men of a thousand faces. Even repainting as the whimsy took you.

(Hey...I do have that School Head A coming for the LA Dolpa...wonder if he'd like being Actor-head. Hmmm...)

Hidey ho... long time, no see. I think the idea to use them as non character characters is a good one. A VERY good one. I think it will add an extra dimension to your already wonderful shoots. And it's always nice to have random people to kill off. I mean characters. Random characters to kill off...
