Just got the weirdest phone call in possibly my entire life thus far.
So, weekend before last I bought a Canon Powershot A710 IS off eBay from a company called Digital Innovations. All together, the bundle cost me $411 (I got two tripods, two lenses, three lense filters, memory cards...the works). They sent me a message stating they'd be shipping it out on the 25th via UPS, and included a tracking#, and that was the last I'd heard from them. Now, I'm not a UPS user, so when the tracking information didn't update beyond "billing info received," I just figured it was a UPS glitch (I don't have that ability to track the pulse of their shipments via update patterns, like I come to be able to with USPS).
But I had gone into the UPS site and figured out, from the shipping method used and the weight of the package, that it should be here tonight. I have been, in fact, pretty excited about it.
Now, brand new the A710 averages (no bundle, just the camera) $250-$400 or so, depending on where you buy it. I chose Digital Innovations because they've got great feedback, they're an actual camera store in NY so this is just like buying from a dealer near me (aside from the shipping time and cost) and comes with a warranty, and because the bundle it came with was so awesome.
One of their managers, Adam, just called me. Nice guy. Sounded very concerned. Said that Canon, when they sent the most recent Powershot shipment, didn't send any A710 models. Explained that they'd been trying to fix the issue, and hadn't had any success. Kept apologizing over and over again. So what is he doing?
He's sending me the brand new, just released A720 IS, which is basically an upgraded version of the A710. It just came out in September. It's got more megapixels, a higher LCD screen resolution, and a few other minor changes to software operability and such. It's so new that the big camera-rating sites don't have reviews on it yet.
And he's sending me this for the same price as the A710 auction I'd won. With all the extra tripods and lenses and filters and whatnot. And he's upgrading my shipping to 2-day, since it wasn't shipped when it was supposed to be. And he's sending me a $20 gift certificate that I can use in their eBay store. And he also gave me their phone number (1-800-758-0087, just so I don't forget it), and said that if I experience any trouble at all with the camera, or I'm not satisfied in any way, I should give him a call.
I've not yet decided how I feel about this, and probably won't until reviews on the A720 IS start coming out. A bit uncertain about the Digic III (as opposed to the Digic II the A710 uses). I've heard that the Digic III makes pictures come out softer than the Digic II, losing sharpness of image. We'll see.
I fucking love karma.
