I'd forgotten how much I love this movie (and the first Ghost in the Shell, too). I'm not a big fan of the original manga by Shirow Masamune, and the Stand Alone Complex series just leaves me disgusted, but I truly love Mamoru Oshii's interpretations of the story and characters. His interest in Hans Bellmer's work becomes really apparent in this opening sequence, for anyone who is familiar with Bellmer's doll photography.

I really need to buy copies of both films, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ooooh, the limited-edition one that was released with the special box set? I've been watching those on Y!JA for years! They've finally started to come down in price (currently ending around 15000 yen, used to close at 35000-55000 or more), and I've been thinking about getting one...

I haven't seen innocence, but every time I see the first movie I always think how I would leap at the opportunity to put my brainbox in a cyborg body...

And you can absolutely see the Hans Bellmer influence here. I was so stunned when you first showed me his work, because it seems to inspire so many things.

I have to admit, the first time I saw Innocence... I thought my DVD player was broken.

I'm sure you know what I mean.

If anything though, that just makes me love it more.

The music and the editing on this are impressive too. That moment of the dolls splitting apart, such a surprise, and yet so appropriate after the cellular divisions.
