Junk Eyes

Here are some more of my junk eyes. I'm still having problems with air bubbles, particularly during the doming process. All of these eyes have imperfections that make them unsaleable. The purple eye is the worst - it shifted in the pressure pot during the curing process, and the dome ended up moving WAY off-center, so it looks like it has some kind of growth. The darker blue eye was a test subject for several different things, including touching the resin before it was fully cured to see what would happen. The answer? Lots of tiny, tiny gouges in the surface of the dome that make the eye look cloudy. The light blue eye actually turned out the best, but again has bubbles in it. For some reason, the clear resin isn't responding well to the pressure pot (not de-bubbling, surface texture going "wonky"), while the white resin does just fine in it. I'm really hoping I can solve the bubble issue without having to build a vacuum chamber. Building the pressure pot was difficult (and expensive) enough!

Since these are junk eyes, I probably won't bother removing the stems from the back. For the eyes I actually intend on selling, the backs will be removed, resulting in a flat-backed/half-round eye.

What kind of clear resin are you using and what PSI are you loading your pressure pot to? I'm using Ice Resin and i've got my pressure pot up to 40psi and I'm not getting any bubbles. Are you warming the clear resin at all or letting it sit for a few minutes before you put it in the caster? I let mine sit for about 5-20 minutes before I put it in. I pour the clear into the domed part of my mold, then i hit it with a heat gun for a few seconds and it releases a lot of it's bubbles. Then i put the eye whites on their side of the mold into the clear part and sandwich it closed.

wow, and it's still bubbling? That's crazy! I made the sclera and the dome in Maya and printed it from shapeways. When I open my molds today I'll show you how I rigged it so they hit the center every time. I shoot the resin into it with a syringe, but the dome I put the clear in first and sandwich. I'm still figuring out how to get the irises to look right, they aren't real pretty so far. XD;; I need to make some changes to the stems and the vents, but they work pretty well. Structurally they look great... just not as much depth as I want.

http://www.iceresin.com/ this is the clear resin I'm using. I really, really like it. I'm allergic to resin in the liquid state, so i was scared to even try the smooth on stuff since it says "industrial use only!". :S The Ice Resin is easy, it doesn't stink, it gives up it's bubbles really easily and it sets up in about 12-24 hours depending on how cold it is in the room. You have to mix at least an ounce every time, or it won't set up right, so i've been fucking around with jewelry making too. XDDDD

That's why I got the jewelry stuff. So far I've managed to use all the extra. You can get the smaller tubes that release a little bit at a time but i had trouble with the tubes leaking.

You're welcome to print the eyeballs i made off shapeways and use and sell them if you want. Just let me know what size you need... although i don't seem to always get the size quite right. ._.;; My 14mm seem more like 16mm. Still working on that. The prints are gritty and you'll need to prime and sand them several times, but the results are really nice. Granted, like i said, i need to revise the stem length and the venting. :3

sure~ no problem. :D I wasn't having much luck getting the Ice Resin to dome on it's own and since i had the power of maya i figured, why not? XD

You can also use a propane torch, which is supposed to work really well, but i'm not comfortable with open flames. I don't even have any candles. X3

Not to ignore the issues you're working in, but these colors are really dramatic and pretty :)

Those are neat! Are you planning on having some for sale at the May convention?
